Memorial Day 2007

Happy Memorial Day everyone!  "Tell a friend to tell a friend!!"

Arlington National Cemetery

Memorial Day is a Federal holiday that is celebrated by the United States on the last Monday of May each year. This holiday was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War, then after World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions associated with this holiday is the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.
Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials (Arlington National Cemetery shown above), usually placing flowers/wreaths upon the graves of loved ones. Over time, this holiday has become the time of year in which to pay our respect to all of our lost loved ones, whether they served in the military or not. In addition to the remembrance of our much-loved ones, Memorial Day has become a time for picnics, family gatherings, reunions, and sporting events. It is not only a day to remember our precious loved ones that have departed from this world, but it is also a day to celebrate life with the people that are important in our lives today.
Memory Quilts and projects are yet another way for people to observe this holiday and honor the special memories of dear ones, alive and deceased. Quilt Pox defines Memory Quilts as, “A quilt made up of blocks to commerate an occasion. Common Memory Quilt themes: Wedding, Retirement, Birthday. Flag of Hope The individual quilt blocks can be made up of signature blocks, direct printed photo blocks, theme related blocks (i.e. a schoolhouse block for graduation).”
Quilting Passion provides a couple of free “flag” patterns (paper-pieced) that could easily be used in the observance/celebration of Memorial Day. The first, shown above and to the right, is a horizontal pattern; the second a vertical pattern. These specific patterns were designed on September 11, 2001 as the United States experienced one of its most tragic of all days; the day the World Trade Center was destroyed, as well as many lives along with it.
Regardless of plans you may have made for today, please take a few moments to remember your loved ones that are no longer here with you, and also take some time to remind those that are still living how much they mean to you!

Angelina Says It's Been 'A Very Heavy Year'

The past months have offered tragedy and joy for Angelina Jolie.

"This has been a very heavy year, in losing my mum and having a fourth child," the actress, 31, told Ann Curry in a Today show interview that aired in the US on Wednesday.

"I suppose I'm very aware of time and of memories and enjoying life," Jolie continued, "not just doing the right thing and being a useful person — which I certainly want to be, and believe that I am."

Recalling her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who died in January at age 56 after a nearly 8-year battle with cancer, Jolie said: "I want to be a great mom like my mom was. And I also want to do things that I love."

On Tuesday at the Cannes Film Festival, where she and Brad Pitt premiered their new movie, A Mighty Heart, Jolie told reporters she plans to take a year off from acting to spend time with her family: Pitt, 43, and kids Maddox, 5; Pax, 3; Zahara, 2; and Shiloh, who turns 1 on May 27.

(Jolie adopted Pax in March from Vietnam, and recently added a fourth line to the tattoo on her left arm that features coordinates for the birthplaces of all her children.)

"I'm in a strange, I suppose, place in my life," Jolie told Curry. "I think that happens when you lose a parent, where you drop into a different kind of serious. And yet, at the same time, you want to laugh and enjoy as much as possible every day."

To that end, she said, "I'm hanging on to my family really tight at this moment, and, because of that, trying to be as good a woman as I can be in my life." At that point, Jolie broke down in tears. "Dammit," she said, "you got me crying."

Curry apologised, but Jolie, regaining her composure, said, "That's alright. It's part of life... I lost my mum. It's a natural thing for a child to lose a parent. I lost my mum too young, but it happened. And I'm happy she's out of pain, because I love her and she's my friend."

PROPERTY IN INDIA

Delhi is the national capital and also one of the hottest and best destinations for investors to buy property in Indian. One of the most proactive reasons for investor’s priority as such is due to its good connectivity with most of the cities in other than the best connecting city to all international airports. The residential & commercial property in India in the recent times has been quite exorbitant.

The recent sealing drive of illegal commercial properties in Delhi for instance had no effect on the property market as such. However, as traders panicked for alternate options, it did create a significant increase in property prices of commercial properties in the malls and other legally acclaimed retail outlets. Delhi’s Khan Market also been in the news recently for being the costliest retail locale in the world.

In the residential market segment, Delhi has been known to have made the most astronomical transactions where properties sell for millions. This trend though most common in the posh localities of South Delhi is now moving towards earlier less significant places like Dwarka. The rental values of residential properties like the apartments and independent houses are quite high. The corporate leasing and diplomats in the city are in a way responsible for the price trend, as they opt for the high-end residential & commercial property in India.

Commercial properties like the office spaces in particular are in much demand as every other company want to have their offices in the city, as Delhi has better edge over many other metros in infrastructure, availability of professional work force and connectivity which has offered the best option to buy property in India.

Historian and Journalist John Ghazvinian discusses his recent trip to Nigeria and the African oil boom. The U.S. now imports more oil from African nations than from Saudi Arabia. [includes rush transcript]
We begin today's broadcast with a look at Africa and oil. It's a little known fact: the United States today imports more oil from Africa than from Saudi Arabia. More than $50 billion in foreign investment in African oil is expected over the next three years.

What has this oil boom meant for Africa's ordinary citizens? Our first guest spent a year reporting across the continent to find out. John Ghazvinian is a journalist who has written for publications including Newsweek, The Nation and Time Out New York. His new book is called “Untapped: The Scramble for Africa's Oil." The book compares the global competition for the continent's oil resources to the nineteenth century scramble for colonization.

John Ghazvinian has just returned from Nigeria, where oil has been the driving force behind a longstanding bloodshed. Protesters in Ogoniland have just ended their week-long occupation of a major oil pipeline hub that forced Royal Dutch Shell to cut their daily production by nearly 40%. In recent weeks, villagers demanding compensation and regional control over Nigerian oil have kidnapped at least 13 foreign workers, occupied a Chevron oilfield, and bombed other international oil pipelines. Two major US companies, Chevron and Hercules Offshore, are evacuating all their non-essential workers from the oil-rich country.

  • John Ghazvinian, Journalist who has written for publications including Newsweek and the Nation. His new book is "Untapped: The Scramble for Africa's Oil." He is a visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.

How Do I have Fun in Korea??

This is a brief list of random places to go to and things to do in Korea...I will add more later, but this is a start.

Seoul

Cool Areas:

Itaewon: This is the foreign section of town, a bit skeezy, but a necessity. Here you will find English used/new bookstores (www.whatthebook.com), a foreign food market, and delicious international/Western cuisine. You will also find a lot of travel agencies and shopping here, as well as the International Clinic. Avoid this place at night, especially if you are a woman traveling alone.

Gangnam: This is a fun area where you will find a lot of familiar chain restaurants, cafes, etc.

Apgujeong: The ritzy area of Seoul, you will find an organic/natural foods grocery store as well as THE BEST RESTAURANT IN SEOUL: Butterfinger Pancakes (check out my review). Good shopping and food (as well as a Krispy Kreme and American Apparel).

Hongdae: This is the university area, small but fun. Everyone likes to go clubbing here on the weekends, as there are lots of cool clubs and bars. On Saturday, there is the Free Market (see my review in review section). It's hip and fun, with some cool shopping and eating.

Myongdon: This is a stop on the subway line. Best area for foreigners in Seoul because the shopping and food are excellent and it is a really fun and festive pedestrian strew to be in.

Insadong: This is the tourist street of Seoul, lovely and very fun. This is where you can get your Korean souvenirs as well as the beautiful and unique traditional Korean paper. There are often traditional bands playing up and down the street. It is very festive and you will also find a number of cool galleries, coffee houses, and restaurants.

DMZ: I'm going next week, so I'll have a separate entry on this later.

Busan (aka Pusan): I haven't gone yet, but everyone I know says it's a rockin' beach...it's on my to do list.

Korean Traditional Village (near Suwon): This is on my June to-do list, but I hear it's pretty cool. They have traditional performances as well as a replica of a, you guessed it, traditional village. The best thing about it, I hear, is that it is in a lovely spot in the mountains.

Seoraksan National ParK: This is a beautiful mountain range, the most famous in Korea. It has amazing mountains, the likes of which I have never seen. It is best in fall, when all the colors change. However, this is also the busiest time to go. Unfortunately, like everywhere else in Korea, it is packed with people. The trails (unless you are doing some real hiking) are like a freeway. Worth it to see the mountains, huge Buddha statue, and temple...but only for a day. If you want peace and quiet...go in the winter or hike deep into the mountains.

More later! Have fun!

Spider-Man 3 - The Great Third Installment of the Spider-Man Trilogy

I have not checked this out yet, but I heard good things.

The long awaited third installment of the Spider-Man movie trilogy has hit the big screen and is impressing many. With a strong following of Spider-Man fans, the new Spider-Man film has sold out at many theaters and topped the box office with a weekend gross of $151 million, more than 30 times the next runner up. Tobey Maguire replicates his previous performance in the first two Spider-Man films but is able to show another side of Spider-Man when a dark, gooey substance turns his suit and his personality towards the dark side. Tobey Maguire still gets the change to portray the nerdy Peter Parker and the superhero Spider-Man but with this new dark side of Spider-Man, Maguire shows more of his acting range. As you have seen in the first two movies, Peter Parker’s uncle was murdered. In Spider-Man 3, Peter Parker forgets his typical role of saving lives and focuses on getting revenge on the man who killed is uncle who is now a superhero known as the Sandman.

Aside from the dazzling special effects and superhero storyline is the story of Peter Parker’s relationship with Mary Jane (played by Kirsten Dunst). This storyline goes along with the previous two movies but all together is over played and not that impressive. Creating an interesting romance storyline that is fresh and unique in a movie would not be very easy but Spider-Man 3 fails to even attempt. Topher Grace (Eric Foreman from That 70’s Show) is also featured in Spider-Man 3 as a photographer and evil villain, Venom.

Spider-Man 3 flows at a very good pace for most of the movie. It rarely leaves you feeling like it’s dragging on or moving so fast that you are having a hard time following it. The big finale, unfortunately, drags on a little longer than it should have. Directors, especially of action movies, are always looking to create that ground breaking movie ending that will leave people talking but this battle sequence finale just lingers on longer than it should.

Overall, the movie is still a great success. It successfully continues the great line of Spider-Man movies that have become one of the most popular comic book turned movie styles. You get a deeper insight and a new angle to Peter Parker’s character. The special effects and action sequence (in general) are truly amazing. For any comic book or Spider-Man fan, this is a must see.

Xbox 360 Elite

I'll stick with Sony 4-life.

Come this fall, two years will have passed since the original Xbox 360 was first introduced as the first of the “next-generation” game consoles. Nearly a year after the Xbox 360 launch, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii game systems hit the scene, but by that time the Xbox 360 already had a decent user base and formidable game library. Since then, the Xbox 360 has enjoyed impressive growth, now boasting a game catalog over 500 titles strong. The Xbox Live Marketplace has also evolved to add a stronger purpose to the system, allowing users to download games, videos, and interact with each other.

This year we get a small update to the Xbox 360 in the new Xbox 360 Elite. While it is arguably a minor evolution to the game console, the Xbox Elite does add some appealing features including an HDMI port and larger hard drive. Priced at $479 USD ($80 more than the Xbox 360 Premium), read on to see if this new system is worth the higher price of admission.

Comcast wants to air recent theatrical releases on TV

Personally, if that happens, it will be even more of a reason to download movies off the net. What do you think??? Check out the article.

While nothing has been solidified yet, Comcast is in talks with several Hollywood studios to have movies aired on television the same day they're released in theaters. The cable company would charge subscribers thirty to fifty dollars to watch a new release at home, which seems awfully damn expensive to me.

Naturally, theater owners aren't thrilled about this idea, since less and less people are going to the movies anyway. The times have definitely changed, and going to the movie is no longer the social event it once was. I live within walking distance of three great theaters here in Minneapolis, and while I do enjoy a matinee now and again I must admit it is much easier to just order the movies up on Netflix now that DVDs are released so quickly after the movies come out.

Meanwhile, Time-Warner is developing something called "Catch-Up," a service that will allow TV viewers to view recent episodes of shows they may have missed.

France Rejects Socialism

Hey everybody, here is some world news that may be of interest. Oh yeah, and remember to, "Tell a friend to tell a friend!"

France Rejects Socialism,

By now I’m sure most blogs readers know that France rejected socialism with their recent elections.  They’ve elected Sarkozy who campaigned on change — changed from total state welfare socialism and towards more market-based economics.  He campaigned hard against criminals — lawbreakers — illegal aliens that are invading their country.  He refused to apologize for calling criminals “scum.”  And that was seen as a “hard line” in France.

Now he’s not all good — he’s completely bought into the global warming business, hook, line, and sinker.  I wonder if he, like algore, is earning millions of dollars by promoting the business of global warming.  And please, don’t compare his conservatism to American conservatism.  The French, in general, are too far left to even comprehend our version of conservatism.

So I have one big question — I wonder if the American voters will do the same in 2008.  I wonder if Americans will choose socialism (that fails EVERY time it’s tried); or if they are willing to give small-government conservatism a chance.  And no, Bush is NOT a small-government conservative.  In fact, none of the candidates that the press loves to promote IS a small-government conservative.  But hopefully one will break out of the pack and show up — to at least give the voters a chance to try something OTHER than socialism.
